BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The B.Ed. Department was introduced in Tamralipta Mahavidyalaya in the session 1965-66 with the affiliation of Calcutta University in terms of Memo. No. C/35/122-afft. Dt. 07-07-1965. From the session 1985-86 the department came under the affiliation of V.U. as per the GOVT. policy and affiliation was obtained the terms of memo no.983-Edn.(U), dt 23-05-1985, It has since been fulfilling the burning need of training of the Secondary teachers with a galaxy of scholarly teacher-educators and now it has become the oldest secondary Teachers Training Centre in the Purba Medinipur district.

The department started with an intake capacity of 125 of which 63 are meant for deputed teachers and 62 seats for fresher candidates initially the subjects which were taught in this English, History, Social Science, Mathematics, Civics & Economics and Elective subjects like Mental Hygiene and Mental & Educational Measurement. Subsequently two other method subjects- Geography and Physical Science (from 2003) were introduced considering the need of the trainees. From the very beginning five full-time faculty posts were sanctioned and in 2006 two more posts were sanctioned and the appointment of these posts by the C.S.C, W.B.is under process. It has since been enriched with a host of teacher-educators like Prof. Santosh Kr. Ghosh, Prof. Gourdas Halder, Prof.Upendra Nah Manna, Prof. Ashoke Gupta, Prof. Nirmal Chandra Das and Prof. Nimai Chandra Maity whose dedicated efforts make the department glorious.

The dept. provides advanced facilities in learning through Educational Technology Lab; Psychology Lab and Geography Lab, Physical Sc. Lab. All these laboratories are equipped with necessary apparatus and equipment in keeping with the guidelines of N.C.T.E. The dept. monitors the performance of the students through regular class tests, practice teaching micro-teaching demonstration lessons, remedial measures, like personal counseling, tutorial, remedial coaching etc. It also assesses the co-curricular activities throughout the year The Dept. has a unique achievement in conducting educational tours and publishing an annual printed Magazine- ‘ LIPIKA’.

Besides bearing the burden of teaching, the faculty members are always trying to upgrade themselves by attending libraries, participating in workshops and seminars, publishing articles in journals, acting as evaluators and members of different administrative bodies.
