Overview :
The Dept. Of BOTANY, TAMRALIPTA MAHAVIDYALAYA was started to be taught at the I. Sc. course in 1949-1950. The dept. of BOTANY with its true generic identity was opened at the degree pass level in 1969 under the UNIVERSITY of CALCUTTA in terms of the memo no. C/10453/122/Aff. Dt. 26.05.69, through the affiliation to the Hons. Course was obtained much later only in 1996 from VIDYASAGAR UNIVERSITY in terms of the meno no. VU/IC.AFF/70/96-97 Dt.16.08.96.

The dept. has been enriched by a host of scholary teachers like Prof. Subir Ganguly, Dr. Ashok Bag, Dr. Satyesh Ch. Roy, Dr. Pranati Ghosh, and Dr. Swapan Bhattacharya, many of whom have subsequently left the dept. for joining as teachers either in universities or in govt. Colleges of the existing faculty members, the contributions of Prof. Samir Ganguly, the senior most faculty member of the dept. Dr. Parimal Nug who took the charge of the dept. .After S.Ganguly had shaken it off, Prof. Salil Kumar Sarkar and Dr. Arati Malakar are immense. Then Dr. Tridib Kumar Sahoo jointed against the post of Prof. Samir Ganguly in April, 2010 and Prof. Sima Biswas jointed against the post of Parimal Nug in January, 2015. Apart from these faculty members, there is one GLI, Sri Gobinda Chandra Biswas and two lab attendants who also render valuable services to the dept. for conducting practical classes and other related work. At present, the dept. is controlled by six teachers and one labratory attendant. The teachers are Dr. Arati Malakar(Assosiate Professor, HOD), Dr. Tridib Kumar Sahoo(Assisant Professor), M. Bikram Pal( Guest lecturer), Mr. Sandip Kumar Maity(Guest lecturer), Miss. Arpita Bera(Guest lecturer),and Mr. Arghya Pal(Guest lecturer), Mr. Ashok Kumar Seth(labratory attendant). As a Practical based means subject different educational tours, national and international seminars can be arrange at various climatic environment or various institutions at regular intervals.

Facilities Offered

Laboratory Facilities:

There are two honours laboratories and one class room for both honours and general students and a common space, where practical class may sometimes run. The staff rooms for both teaching and non- teaching staff accommodated at one side of the laboratory. However, Theoretical classes are also taken in the genera class rooms of the college.

Library Facility:

The departmental library is enriched with more than 250 books and is available for the both Teachers and students.
