The beginning of the ancient part of Tamralipta has not been accurately identified till now. Ancient Tamralipta’s worth mentioning monument is “Devi Sati”s 51th Pith’s Bargabhima temple or Bhimrupa temple. On account of Tamralipta’s ancient tradition and modern reflection, Tamralipta Mahavidyalaya has surpassed many obstacles since 1948. The glorious Tamralipta Mahavidyalaya’s B.A. Sanskrit General Course had been introduced Since 1960. From that very year the Department of Sanskrit was nurtured by its foster father Late Prof. Baidyanath Bhattacharya. The long awaited desire of the department was fulfilled in the year 2005, and in 2013 when B.A. Sanskrit Honours & M.A. in Sanskrit Course were granted by the Vidyasagar University. At present two full time Professors. Smt. Lina Samui (Ghosh), Miss Purnima jana and two Part-time Lecturers and Five guest Lecturers are indefatigably giving their heart and Soul for the development of the Students and department. We all hope that the Department of Sanskrit will become more glorious and achieve its destination in the forthcoming years.

Apart from the Central Library the department has its own library which is quite rich in collection of books , Journals and Manuscripts. The department provides internet and Computer access for Staff & Students.
